Colon Cancer and Peritoneal Metastasis: Treatment Process
Our 64-year-old patient continued to have regular checkups and examinations after his first surgery for colon cancer. However, in the latest checkups, it was determined that the cancer had spread to the peritoneum. Peritoneal spread , or metastatic disease, indicated that the cancer was progressing and that standard treatment methods might not be sufficient.
HIPEC and Cytoreduction Surgery Recommendation
In such advanced cases, my surgeon friend suggested an advanced surgical procedure called HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) and cytoreduction . He believed that this combination of treatments could control the disease and improve the patient's quality of life. After carefully evaluating the patient, we determined that this aggressive treatment method was the most appropriate option.
Cytoreduction Surgery and HIPEC Treatment Process
Cytoreduction surgery is based on removing as much of the cancerous tissue as possible and can take quite a long time. During surgery, after most of the tumorous tissue in the body has been removed, HIPEC treatment is applied by injecting high-temperature chemotherapy fluid into the abdominal cavity. This method aims to destroy microscopic cancer cells and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
The surgery took about eight hours and was completed successfully. After most of the tumor tissue was removed, HIPEC treatment was successfully applied. The cancer cells in the peritoneum were targeted with the help of hot chemotherapy fluid.
Post-Operative Recovery Process
Our patient recovered faster than expected after the surgery. Although he felt mild pain and fatigue in the first days, his general condition improved rapidly. He was discharged within a week without needing intensive care. Our patient, who is also in good psychological condition, stated that he felt strong for successfully overcoming this challenging process.
This case has proven once again that HIPEC and cytoreduction surgery can yield effective results in the treatment of advanced cancer. Although this method does not produce the same results in every patient, this patient achieved a significant improvement in both life expectancy and quality of life. Our patient's regular check-ups are currently ongoing and we are closely monitoring postoperative developments.
This process was a challenging yet satisfying experience for both us and our patient. Early diagnosis is always critical for diseases such as colon cancer , but in the case of metastasis, it is possible to give hope to patients with modern treatment methods.

Our Patient with Colon Cancer and Peritoneal Metastasis Explains
